The lock-screen art app that became a lock-screen shop.

A New York app that showed a new painting at every unlock, listed in December 2014, which by January 2016 was selling tastemakers' picks from the lock screen instead.

"See Beautiful Paintings on Your Lock Screen," said Muse Art's listing, created in December 2014 and captured in March 2015 with a New York City address. The Android app, in public beta, showed a different painting every time the phone was opened, turning what the listing called "a necessary but unproductive step into an inspiring moment of learning." A recommendation engine picked paintings for each user, a publishing tool let artists and institutions reach the lock screen, and the database, the listing said, held more than 100,000 works by Old Masters and emerging artists.

In May 2015 Android Authority featured Muse Art Lock Screen as a free app that could be browsed by publication, museum, collection or artist, though it noted that paintings sometimes repeated.

By January 2016 the lock screen was selling things. A Two Tap post of 26 January described Muse as "the first app that allows product discovery and shopping from the lock screen": users followed tastemakers and could tap to buy items from more than 2,000 stores, among them Barney's, Gucci and Home Depot. It quoted founder Andrea Riposati and gave the company's own figure: 70 percent of Muse's users were women with higher education who followed tastemakers on social media. AlternativeTo still lists the art app under Riposati's name and notes that seemuse.com is no longer available.

The company's LinkedIn page now describes Muse Technologies as a data analytics platform for personalization and influencer e-commerce, founded in 2014. No source we found dates the end of the app, and its Google Play page returns not found.

Riposati's own CV lists him as chairman of Muse Technologies from 2014 to 2016. Separately, it lists him since 2016 as chief executive of Dante Labs, a different company, now called Dante Genomics.
