Mezi started as a texting shopping assistant and sold to American Express as a travel app.

A San Francisco shopping-by-text service listed in February 2016 that narrowed to travel that November, took investment from American Express Ventures and was bought by American Express in January 2018.

In February 2016 Mezi's Stompstart page offered "the simplest way to buy anything just by sending a text message." Listed from San Francisco, the service promised to choose well-reviewed products, compare prices across merchants, apply discount coupons and handle checkout, so users no longer had to keep accounts or type in card details. People did part of the work. "Our Assistants are shopping experts who are professionally trained," the listing said, and they worked with the company's own software. The image saved with the page shows its headline: "SIMPLEST WAY TO BUY ANYTHING."

According to TechCrunch, twin brothers Swapnil and Snehal Shinde founded Mezi in 2015, after Rdio bought their earlier company, the Indian music streaming service Dhingana, in 2014. In July 2016 Mezi raised a $9 million Series A led by American Express Ventures, part of $11.8 million in total by Crunchbase's count. That November, after travel proved its most successful category, it narrowed its focus to flights, hotels and restaurant bookings alone.

On 30 January 2018 American Express acquired Mezi for undisclosed terms. PYMNTS reported that it would run as a wholly owned unit of American Express, and TechCrunch noted that Mezi's technology already powered AskAmex, a concierge app for card members. Marketing Dive described the service at the time of the sale: users messaged requests, the software suggested options, and human assistants completed the bookings. It was the arrangement the 2016 listing had described, applied to travel.

The gomezi.com address on the listing no longer resolves. We could not establish what became of the Mezi app after the acquisition.
