The anonymous voice-chat app strangers could listen in on.
A Montreal iPhone app for anonymous one-to-one voice calls that other users could silently overhear, from Epic Meal Time co-creator Sterling Toth, whose company Hearium Inc. was dissolved in August 2015.
Hear's listing called it "Whisper for Voice." Two strangers talked anonymously while a large group of other anonymous users could drop in and listen, always muted so they could not interrupt. The listing explained the choice of voice over text: speaking about your problems out loud gives "a sense of relief," especially when you cannot say it to family or friends. Listed on 12 November 2014 and placed in Montreal, it said the company behind the app, Hearium Inc., was founded by Sterling Toth, "the co-creator of EpicMealTime."
Toth had introduced the app himself a month earlier. In a Reddit AMA on 13 October 2014, he called himself the co-creator of Epic Meal Time, said he had been pushed out of that company in 2011, and announced that he had "just released an app for iOS that lets you talk and listen to people anonymously." Users found a chat by searching for a male or female partner, he wrote; the app was completely anonymous and did not record what was said, and he promised news of an Android version.
A review on Geeks Are Sexy on 20 October 2014 described Hear as free on iOS in North America. Users started with an allowance of listening minutes and could buy more or earn them by sharing the app. The review said the chief executive had co-created Epic Meal Time and directed its first 37 episodes.
Hearium Inc. lasted about 15 months. Corporations Canada records its incorporation under the Canada Business Corporations Act on 2 May 2014, with Toth as director, and its dissolution by the corporation on 3 August 2015, with that year's annual filing overdue. The app's App Store page now returns a not-found error, and hear.so serves HearOS, an unrelated AI tool for customer feedback.
