The Boston beacon-rental marketplace that became Fysical.

A Boston marketplace for renting access to existing iBeacon networks that renamed itself Fysical, a location data market, and is listed by Infillion, formerly Gimbal, among its 2019 acquisitions.

BeaconsInSpace pitched itself on Stompstart as "Airbnb for iBeacons." Its Boston listing, on directory pages from June 2015 and captured in full in February 2016, described "a marketplace for apps to hook into existing beacon networks": owners could list their beacons and apps could rent them. "Be it a convention center for the day, or a bar for the year," it said, apps could scale "when and where they want to."

BetaList had featured it on 5 March 2015 as "Airbnb for beacons." A January 2016 copy of beaconsinspace.com offered developers "beacon infrastructure APIs" and a marketplace of aggregated beacon networks, and told beacon owners: "List your beacons. Make money." In July 2016 StartUp Beat reported a partnership giving BeaconsInSpace apps access to the startup Check's beacons in more than 1,000 French venues, and the company's own note at the foot of the article said over 500 apps were listed on the platform. Co-founder Justin Mann said apps could "finally add context to their user experience at scale."

On 5 December 2017 the Fysical blog introduced Fysical as "a blockchain for the location data market," in a post by Ben Smith. By 11 January 2018 the BeaconsInSpace home page, titled "Monetize your app without ads," read "BeaconsInSpace is now Fysical." A July 2019 copy of fysical.com showed Fysical Labs, Inc. selling place-visit data from what it called "a human movement SDK that is installed across hundreds of mobile applications."

Infillion, the company known as Gimbal | true[X] until it took its new name in March 2022, lists Fysical among its 2019 acquisitions as a "location data marketplace," without giving terms. It calls Fysical "a 3-person startup" and says its founder, Ben Smith, "now leads Infillion's entire Data Products organization."
